The story

Blue pottery has been made in Multan for centuries, in the same cobalt and turquoise as the tiles on its shrines. Every flower on this vase is painted by hand, so no two are quite alike.

It holds water, so it works for fresh flowers as well as dried, and it's just as good standing empty on a shelf.

How it's made

  1. 01

    Shaping

The vase is thrown on a wheel and left to dry.

  2. 02

    First firing

It's fired once, then dipped in white slip.

  3. 03

    Painting

Flowers and borders are painted on by hand in cobalt and turquoise.

  4. 04

    Glaze

A clear glaze goes over everything, and it's fired again.

The blue is so deep and the hand painting is lovely up close. It arrived wrapped in so much padding, not a scratch.
