Phulkari Dupatta
4.73 reviewsEvery flower is stitched from the back of the cloth.
Phulkari means flower work. The embroiderer works from the back of handwoven khaddar, counting the threads, so each stitch lies on the front as one long, straight line of silk floss.
Neighbouring petals run their stitches the other way. Turn the dupatta in the light and the gold and the pink trade places.

How it's made
- 01
The khaddar
Cotton is spun and woven into coarse khaddar, then dyed rust red.
- 02
Counting threads
Nothing is drawn on. The embroiderer counts the weave and works from the back.
- 03
Silk floss
Untwisted silk is laid in long darning stitches, one petal at a time.
- 04
The pallu
The ends get the densest work, so the border shows as the dupatta falls.

The embroidery is so fine and dense, it looks even better than the photos. Wore it to my cousin's mehndi and three people asked where it's from.

Lovely dupatta. Slightly heavier than I expected but it falls well.
